Kuchipudi Bhagavathas have a customary
prayer song ‘Amba paraku, Devi paraku’ on the village deity ‘Bala
Tirupurasundari’, before the start of the every program. The song too has a
history and purpose which we need to understand and follow.
Kuchipudi Bhagavathas not only were adept
at the dance art form but also lived as per Santana Dharma. Prior to prayer
song ‘Amba paraku’, they used to sing ‘Amba Bhajami, Jagadambam Bhajami’ which
was in Bija Akshara. Since they used to travel and perform at various places
and environs, following certain rules as per Sastras, for usage of sacred
mantra like Bija Akshara could not be adhered as per stipulations.
Vedantam Sambaiya’s, (forefathers of the
Legendary Vedanam Satyanarayana Sarma), daughter Vedantam Appa started singing
the prayer song ‘Amba paraku, Devi paraku’ while performing a pooja to the
peepal tree for the well being of the girls of the family in general. Being
devotees of the village deity, the Bhagavathas construed that it was a blessing
from the Divine and started singing this song as a prayer from then on.
The ten stanza song which was originally
sung in Poorna Khamboji raga is now being sung in Khamboji and Mohanam ragas
too. The song includes a prayer for the well being of all concerned to the art
form, the artists, the organisers, the audience, etc.
Let us follow the same in Silicon Andhra
International Kuchipudi Convention and in all our programs religiously since
this song is an universal prayer for the well being of all in the lines of
‘Sarve Jana Sukina bavanthu’.
